Christmas is a special time to wish happy holidays and a happy new year to those who are dear to us. It is one of the magical and wonderful times to express our gratitude toward all those who have done good things for us. Aware of your love for the people of La Gonâve and the impact of your ministry in their life, I would like on their behalf, in this special season of rejoicing, to say THANK YOU and wish to all our sister churches, every one of you, your families, and all our friends and benefactors --- a blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year 2022 full of happiness. ![]()
Beloved brothers and sisters, know that you give meaning to our life; you are part of our life. Where we feel abandoned by the leaders of our own country, particularly on this seemingly abandoned island that is la Gonâve; where we feel alone with the challenges of daily life, you always show yourselves available to us, as sisters and brothers in the Lord. Because of you, all the ten (10) existing schools in the partnership still providing good education and the employees are monthly and regularly paid. A new school, a middle school, is under construction in Palma and we are making great progress with hope its doors will open the coming summer. The Bill Rice clinic provides health care service in Nouvelle Cite and through mobile clinics in the remote areas too. Other activities or programs such adult literacy, goat, microcredit…...are also operational. Thousands of families survive because of you. Thank you for all of this and for all the gestures of love you have shown towards us. God bless you and Merry Christmas to all of you!![]()

Reflection on St. Simon & St. Jude, Platon Balai![]()

"What can possibly happen to make life better for the community here?" ![]()

That is a question I have asked myself and the Good Lord every time I have visited the very remote village of Platon Balai, which is home to St. Simon & St. Jude, the farthest-flung Episcopal church on La Gonâve and our (St. Andrew's Anglican, Little Rock, AR) sister church.![]()

The village is so remote and so poor that even our Haitian colleagues in Anse-a-Galets are stumped by this question.![]()
![]()
There are no easy answers and there are plenty of obstacles, but I believe there is also great reason for hope.![]()
![]()
One of my favorite memories of a trip to Platon Balai took place in March 2013, when a team from St. Andrew's went out to help Boss Therlange and a local crew of workers to get started on putting gutters on the church building after the local community told us that building a large cistern was a very high priority for them because the closest water source was an hour's walk away to Gros Mangles. We asked the community what they could contribute to this important project. Père Soner, Père Vil's predecessor, had observed that "God had blessed Platon Balai with a lot of rocks!" and the community said they couldn't contribute financially, but they could certainly gather some of those blessed rocks. Early one morning, as our team slept on floors in the church and school, we were awakened by the sound of many footsteps and looked out to find that the whole community, from very young to very old, had come out to gather rocks. We scrambled out to join them, and by noon the industrious crowd had gathered two large piles of stones, enough for a great start to build the much-needed cistern. By God's grace, some large anonymous donations allowed St. Andrew's to send the funds to complete the construction, and by the time I returned to celebrate the Feast Day of Sts. Simon and Jude in October 2013, it had become a reality.![]()

But the work started with the community and their willingness to contribute what they could. ![]()
![]()
I still have no easy answers for Platon Balai, but I see in that community the willingness and grit to work together toward important goals. Sometimes, God blesses you with a lot of rocks, and you just have to find a way, with His help, to move them.

It is with great sadness that we hear of the horrific kidnapping of the 17 missionaries this past week north of Port-au-Prince. We pray for their safety and quick return to their families in the U.S. and Canada. I have been in communication with Pere Vil, the priest in charge of the St. Francois d’Assise Episcopal Parish on la Gonâve over the past several days and would like to share some of these conversations with you below.![]()

Life in Haiti today is a miracle…Because of the increasing insecurity, people on la Gonâve and over the country are not comfortable doing business now. Cases of abduction are daily reported; no one is spared and the kidnappers do not consider anyone’s social status. We must have courage to go to the mainland, to travel the national roads to buy products and come and sell them here in la Gonâve. Here there is no violence politics and insecurity. But, these situations have a negative impact on the daily life; they bring up prices in the market. And we suffer a lot from it in la Gonâve Life does not end, however. We must adjust the sails and continue to live. ![]()

A message from Pere Vil about the computer lab: The computer lab is installed on the left side of the entry courtyard of the school. We are ready to provide the computer class to the students of the secondary section. Parents, students, teachers, and curious people are excited about the computer lab. I am grateful to all of you. ![]()
Today, so many students want to come to Saint Francis school. We have a respected school and is is not the fruit/result of a day's or a year's labor. Lots of love, sacrifices, money, prayers....I am grateful and proud of you all as our loved partners.
ON SEPTEMBER 14, THE COMMUNITY OF NOUVELLE CITÉ on la Gonâve will gather for a celebration of the Feast of the Holy Cross. This is a time to honor the cross upon which Christ died and to offer praise and thanksgiving for all of God’s blessings. First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, longtime partner with the Nouvelle Cité and St. Croix church, sends greetings and love to our friends on this special day. We also announce the gift First Presbyterian is making of a scholarship for a Nouvelle Cité student to attend the new middle school when it is finished.![]()

Many goods things have occurred in spite of these recent difficult months and we rejoice in God’s faithfulness and all that has been accomplished in Nouvelle Cité. The church has a new roof, a garden project is underway, and repairs to the goat barn have been completed. New guttering and a cistern have been installed to supply water for the goats and garden. The Kid for a Kid program has begun with 5 students being given goats to care for. 35 participants are now in the adult literacy program and the microfinance project continues to offer loans for business endeavors.![]()

Excitement is building for the Mary and Martha Middle School nearby which will enable students in Nouvelle Cité and several other communities to continue learning after 6th grade. In the elementary school at this time there are 180 students, 92% of whom passed their exams and moved onto the next level. A nutritious lunch is served to the students each day. ![]()

First Presbyterian Atlanta praises God for the resilience and faith of our brothers and sisters in Christ in Nouvelle Cité and the blessings of our friendships. We look forward the time we can be together in fellowship. We send our love and continued prayers for God’s care.
AUGUST 24th IS A FESTIVE DAY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN NAN MANGO, a remote mountain community on the offshore Haitian island of La Gonave. It is the feast day of Saint Bartholemey, the patron saint of Nan Mango’s one-room Episcopal church. The whole community celebrates the day with a visit from Pere Vil, the sole Episcopalian priest assigned to the entire island. For the feast day there will be a church service that may include baptisms and weddings. A special meal will be enjoyed by all after the service. Celebrating the day from afar will be the members of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. For many years Covenant has been in relationship with the people of Nan Mango, partnering with them in support as the Haitians there work towards building a vibrant, hopeful and resilient community. La Gonave Haiti Partners is a 501C3 made up of about 20 U.S. churches from several denominations that, like Covenant, are partnered with a healthcare center and with the other 9 communities in the parish on La Gonave. Nan Mango is one of ten communities served by the Episcopal parish. In each community the parish provides a church with a lay leader and a primary school serving pre-K through 6th grade children. Also sponsored by the parish in each community are adult literacy classes, mobile health clinics, services from a trained community healthworker and from a birth attendant, and entrepreneurial opportunities through microfinance loans and goat farming. By contributing financial support to these initiatives in Nan Mango, Covenant underwrites the salaries for more than 20 Haitians in this one small community. ![]()

On the occasion of the feast day of St. Bartholemey in Nan Mango we at Covenant celebrate the 170 students in the community’s primary school, 88% of whom passed their end-of-year tests in May. We celebrate the 41 adult literacy students as they study reading, writing and arithmetic in their evening classes. We celebrate the past year when there were no infant or maternal deaths among the mothers enrolled in the maternal health program. We celebrate the 23 micro-finance entrepreneurs supporting themselves and their families. We celebrate the school children who are learning to raise goats so that they can help support their families. Similar stories can be told about each of the other 9 communities on the island.![]()

So much of what we hear about Haiti involves one tragedy after another after another. We celebrate that tragedy is not Haiti’s only story. And we are thankful for the relationship that has grown between the St. Bartholemey and the Covenant communities. We look forward to a time after political unrest on the mainland and after Covid everywhere, when we can once again travel and visit Nan Mango in person, sharing hugs and friendship.

Pere Vil reports that all continues to be well on the island. Tropical Storm Grace is bringing wind and some heavy rains, but they are in their third day of teacher training and most teachers have been able to travel to St. Francis for training. They are also getting ready for the new school year which begins September 6th. In addition, they are working to secure the new computer lab to its platform at St. Francis and hook up the electrical panel to run the air conditioner unit and computers. The teachers are very excited about the new lab!![]()

We continue to pray for the victims of the earthquake. There may be a chance some are transported to the Wesleyan Hospital on la Gonâve for treatment, and staff at the hospital are in communication with Dr. Lapointe, the medical director of the Bill Rice Health Center, to pool resources if needed. Thanks to our several partners, the container recently shipped to la Gonâve had medical equipment and supplies needed to buildout an urgent care center. These might become useful to some of those suffering from the earthquake.![]()

Our hearts are heavy for the loss of lives and destruction caused by the earthquake that struck Saturday morning on the mainland of Haiti. I have been in touch with Pere Vil every day since then to learn of its impact on our communities on la Gonâve He reports that the impact has been minimal. They have experienced some aftershock waves, but, “All is good. It is a worrying and difficult time to live, but we have been spared from damages…The departments most affected are the South, Southeast, and Nippes." As of this morning, "The most recent report is 1287 deaths with more than 6500 people injured.” ![]()

TODAY, JULY 25, IS A SPECIAL DAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF BOIS BRULÉ, ON THE HAITIAN ISLAND OF LA GONÂVE. It is the Feast Day celebration at St. Jacques Church and School. The day began at 9AM with a church service filed with joyful music and singing. Afterwards, the community gathered for a “feast” on the church grounds.![]()

Bois Brulé is a community in the middle of la Gonâve and a long 2 hour drive from the coast up a rough, rutted road. It's sits atop a high mountain range surrounded by trees and shrubs. Bois Brulé is literally translated as “burnt wood.”![]()

The people of Bois Brulé are very welcoming, inviting the visiting teams from Clarksville, Tennessee, for a walk through the village to experience the tasks of daily life in Haiti and afterwards to share a meal together. ![]()

The students at St. Jacques School are eager to learn and have recently passed the national exams with 94% success rate. The school now has 145 students and 9 teachers. The adult literacy progrm is also growing, with local students doubling to 24. Leo Forneus (the elementary school principal) and Frantz Toussaint are the instructors. Most exciting news is that 7 participants have joined a microfinance program to build their own small business ventures.![]()

TOMORROW, JUNE 24TH, IS A SPECIAL DAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF PLAINE MAPOU, ON THE HAITIAN ISLAND OF LA GONÂVE. It is the feast day of St. John the Baptist. ![]()

St. Jean Baptiste Eglise (Church) celebrates this day with a visit by their priest Pere Vil, the only ordained Episcopal priest assigned to 10 churches on the island. Lay Pastors lead the churches when the priest is not there, but only an ordained Priest can perform baptisms and weddings. So on the feast day there are many baptisms and weddings. It is a celebration for everyone! Nearby churches bring their choirs and special musicians are hired. After the service everyone enjoys a feast! St. Philip’s Church in Charleston, SC began its partnership with its sister church on la Gonâve, St. Jean Baptiste, in 1995 with a feast day visit. Each year after, on feast day, members of the two churches gather … it is like a family reunion.![]()

St. Jean Baptiste Church and school are situated high up on la Gonâve nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains. The rich red dirt of Plaine Mapou (named for the Mapou trees which used to populate it) is good for growing corn, peanuts, squash and beans. There are coconut trees, mango trees and bread fruit trees. ![]()

Thanks to the agricultural program of La Gonâve Haiti Partners, the schools are teaching students how to grow their own small gardens right next to the school building. There is also a new goat program to teach 5 students of our most vulnerable families goat husbandry. Once they complete the class the students are given a pregnant goat so they can begin their family’s goat herd.![]()

The school, located on the same grounds as the church, consists of two buildings. The upper school building has three classrooms and the preschool building has one classroom and an office. It serves 3 pre-K grades with 25 students and 1st through 6th grade with 85 students. There are 9 teachers, a principal, a cook, a guardian and a housekeeper. There is also an adult literacy class that meets in the evenings, with 3 teachers and 16 students. Each student, both child and adult and the staff, get one hot meal included with their education. This is often the only meal they may receive that day. ![]()

Thanks to the help of Water Missions International, the church and school buildings have new roofs and water catchment systems which will help the cisterns stay full. Since there is no place to drill a well in Plaine Mapou and the nearest well is about an hour's walk away, a good functioning water catchment system is vital to the community. ![]()

There is a mobile medical clinic at the church on a regular basis. The clinic serves the church and schools as well as the wider community. Three health care workers from the church are trained and supported by the clinic and are the front line healthcare providers for the community. The nutrition program serves the community from St. Jean the Baptiste too. Each baby in the program is weighed and charted and given a special nutritional supplement which helps them grow in weight and development.![]()

St. John the Baptist Feast Day is a day to celebrate the work of the church in the community of Plaine Mapou. The work of the church is primarily saving souls for eternity, but it is also about the work of the kingdom in the here and now. Lotore is a beautiful farming community, perched on a plateau high above the ocean. There are old growth mango and breadfruit trees, fields of hand-tended peanuts, corn, eggplant. The families who farm are experts at terracing into the hillsides and tilling deep furrows. It is a very natural, close to the earth existence.![]()

St. Barnabas is a blessing to the community of Lotore. St. Barnabas was known as the Encourager and this perfectly describes the mission of the people of the church and school. The church is there for Lotore in good and bad times and serves as a center for education, worship and music, agricultural advice and animal care and vaccination. It also has a community health worker who works with the Bill Rice Center staff for prenatal clinics. All these programs are provided to the whole community. They know that, though Lotore is a remote community, the church is always there for encouragement and support. The staff at St. Barnabas is warm, creative, energetic and professional. They set a brilliant example to the people they serve. ![]()

God is so evident in the beauty of the land and in the people of Lotore. From the rising of the sun complete with the roosters crowing and the donkeys braying, to the bustle of a medical clinic, to the talking and laughing at the dinner table, until the quiet of bedtime, His presence is so strong.
