September 7 kicked off the start of the school year for all 11 schools in La Gonâve. Students and teachers alike brought positive energy for the first day of class, ready to begin the new year. In recent years, classes have started in October due to safety and inflation concerns. This year the Ministry of Education deemed it safe enough to return to starting school in September. Enrollment in rural primary school is initially slow, as many rural families aren’t concerned about missing classroom days. They hold different beliefs in the value of education.
