The recent All Saints-Lotore trip got to see an example of the integral role that Bill Rice Clinic and the CHWs play in the health of communities outside Bill Rice. Our remote clinic had a patient with a machette wound to the hand. Dr Dorcius was on our team and examined it, Ms. Dupont (Bill Rice nurse) sutured it and I just assisted. Our team had sterile laceration trays, lidocaine and everything needed for care, including antibiotics. The pt. was sent home with instructions to follow up with Yvenia St Cyr, the CHW. She had a suture removal kit and all the supplies needed to care for his wound over the next week or two. Because she works at each Lototre clinic she was able to meet the pt. and receive instructions directly from Dr Dorcius, including what to do in case of infection- which was to send the pt. to Bill Rice Clinic. The pt. had a familiar face in his community to turn to for care and she has the respect of the community because she is a Bill Rice Ajen Sante. Yvenia is the second person from left on the front row of above photo. The gift of these backpacks is amazing and these women and men will do amazing things with them. Thanks to this donor!

Wonderful!! Community Health Workers can do most important work ! Several decades ago we created C.H.W.'s in Kentucky, assigned two to each public health nurse, and they worked very well .Many thanks to Deb for taking this on. Of course training and supervision is the keystone .Thanks and Cheers--Bill Elsea

Leslie,
The classes are taught in Kreyol. That is the functional language for them. This is one of the most moving programs we have right now. When you are in Lo Torre next you should ask to meet with the class there. They are always eager to talk about what they are learning.

Joan,
Thanks for you comment. The women have been hard at work with the machines. It was quite a trip getting them there, but so worth the effort.

Lee- love this story and project! When I explain it to people they ask me if the students are learning to read Kreyol or French. What's the correct answer? Thanks!

Good for you! Wonderful to see the efforts, and the three sewing machines hit a cord with us..we just took in the same to AAE this month, April. Sailors Without Borders has focused on AAE..Anse Galet, Nan Coton, Palma--and your team with another area. But we know what it takes.the committment, step by step efforts..and the slow but steady progress. Our hats off to you all.

Thank you for your question! You may know that La Gonave has the least accessible water in the entire world according to hydrogeologists. Wells and cistern systems are needed for all 10 of our communities. To date, we have wells at 2 locations (Anse-a-Galets and Nouvelle Cite), filtration and cistern systems at these same locations. We have working cisterns at Nan Mango and Bois Brulee. Most of the other communities need to build cistern systems as well as drill wells.

Our wish is to have funding and technical partners to join with us in bringing water to these communities. For some of them, women and children walk up 4-6 hours round trip each day for water. Accessible, clean water is transformative. Join us in these efforts!

Such great work once again. I'm so blessed to be part of this family that loves our Haitian brothers and sisters. I look forward to our trip coming up in April. God bless La Gonave, the whole Haiti Country and the hearts of those who are still stirred to help. Thank you Lord for providing new helpers with each trip too. You do indeed always provide.

Are we talking about a water well or building a water filtration system for an existing well?
